Assessment
Design Principle
Describe how the linguistic development of students is monitored and assessed
Example
Students are assessed on their language proficiency at various times and in various ways (oral/written, different genres) both formatively and summatively. Their development is tracked (e.g., in a language portfolio), and there is room for the use of home languages as a bridge to the language of instruction.

Checklist
Teachers…
- often provide feedback to students so that they know where they stand in terms of language development
- ensure that they monitor and assess students’ language development in various forms and genres
- allow the use of the home language as a tool in assessing the development of the language of instruction
