The University of Jaén (UJA) is located to the northeast of the Autonomous Region and has Granada and Córdoba as neighbouring cities. The UJA is a medium-sized public university with over 900 professionals who are part of the teaching and research staff (over 400 of whom are devoted to administration and services), forming a cohesive team that covers the needs of 16,500 students enrolled in 46 undergraduate and 47 postgraduate programs.
According to data from the Spanish Education Ministry, the University of Jaén is in the 11th position among all Spanish universities in the ranking of degrees with the highest employment rates. The UJA participates in international educational programs, such as ERASMUS+, Atlantis Project, PIMA and Outstanding Sports Programs, with more than 700 incoming and 700 outgoing international exchange students per academic year. The UJA welcomes international students as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile, which is of utmost importance for the University, an institution that is constantly striving to widen both its knowledge and its horizons.
The University of Jaén’s commitment to bilingual education has always been firm and outstanding. In addition to offering subjects taught through English Medium Instruction in a vast gamut of graduate and undergraduate degrees, the UJA is in the process of establishing a full-fledged Plan for the Promotion of Pluringualism, coordinated by María Luisa Pérez Cañado.

Dr. María Luisa Pérez Cañado is Full Professor at the Department of English Philology of the University of Jaén, Spain, where she is also WP leader for plurilingual and intercultural education within the European University Alliance NEOLAiA. She is Principal Investigator of the Research Group HUM1040 and her research interests are in Applied Linguistics, bilingual education, and new technologies in language teaching. She is currently coordinating the first intercollegiate MA degree on bilingual education and CLIL in Spain and has been or is Principal Investigator of 15 European, national, and regional projects on language teaching methodologies and CLIL. She has also been granted the Ben Massey Award for the quality of her scholarly contributions regarding issues that make a difference in higher education and four awards for pedagogical innovation and best teaching practices (2010, 2020, 2022, and 2023). She has equally been a finalist in the Premios Educa Abanca a Mejor Docente de España and is included in the Top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists according to the Ranking of World Scientists drawn up by Stanford University (2021, 2022, and 2023).

Dr Encarnación Almazán Ruiz got her PhD in English Linguistics at the University of Granada. She currently works as an assistant professor at the University of Jaén, teaching in both Graduate and Postgraduate programs. Her research interests include corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, digital humanities, and implementing innovative teaching approaches in the EFL classroom. Dr Almazán Ruiz has published several papers in different fields, with a particular focus on analysing political discourse and researching the effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach for teaching English grammar.
